Family Systems - Family Communication

In this course, parents will learn to understand and identify family systems issues that affect their families including family roles, boundaries, and communication patterns. To better understand the strengths and problems of their unique family system, parents will learn to create a personalized Genogram (a genogram resembles a family tree however it includes additional relationships among individuals). In addition, parents will also learn practical information that will enable them to decrease power struggles with their adolescents.
You will learn how to:
- State how a family Genogram can help you better understand your family system. Create a list of established behavior patterns that exist within your family. Create a list of potential problem areas that exist within your family.
- Record primary relationships that exist within your family, using standard Genogram symbols to represent types of relationships. Record secondary relationships that exist within your family, using standard Genogram symbols to represent types of relationships.
- Specify ways that you can decrease power struggles and conflicts with your adolescent that occur due to roles played within the family.
- Specify methods for changing your role as a parent.
- Identify changes in your family dynamic and how your family is able to adapt.
- Identify methods of managing a healthy family system via appropriate give-and-take where role experimentation and definition is occurring.
- Specify ways that you can decrease power struggles and conflicts with your adolescent that occur due to communication patterns that exist within the family. Identify methods of managing a healthy family system via improved communication.
