If you have a child that requires you to remind them over and over about following through on a task, and/or if you are tired of being the “mean parent”, there is a better way to manage behavior and still maintain your relationship. By learning to effectively use a behavioral contract, you will place responsibility and the consequences squarely on the shoulders of the child and remove yourself from the nagging, reminding, and yelling that often comes when a child does not follow through on their commitments. This course will show you how to eliminate negative and destructive behaviors in your child and help you to re-establish control as a parent. By following a step-by-step approach to implement a behavioral contract, you will be guided through the gaining of self-insight, targeting behaviors, using specific language for your contract, and identifying effective consequences.
This course is geared toward the adolescent, but the information can be adapted to also apply to the younger child as well.
As a complement to this course, the FamilyIQ article, "Writing a Behavioral Contract:" contains practical information specifically on writing a contract. In addition, there is also a sample contract form for you to download, print, and use.
Course Benefits
In this course you will learn how to create a 'win-win' in managing your child's behavior.
You will:
§ Gain Self-Insight:by discovering more about yourself as you think about and describe your habitual responses to your child’s provocative behavior, and improve your communication and degree of consensus with your partner (if you have one) regarding discipline.
§ Target Behaviors: You will learn how to identify the most pressing behavior problems, and how to choose which behaviors to include in your first contract.
§ Use Specific Language: You will learn how to choose clear, precise language that will save you from creating any “loopholes” in your contract
§ Identify Effective Consequences: You will discover how to prepare yourself for enforcing consequences.
